Field Opportunities
Job Function/Requirements: 
  • Responsible for the daily care of animals used in research and development according to established study protocols
  • Ensure compliance with IACUC, USDA and any regulatory agencies regarding animal care
Essential Job Duties: 
  • Responsible for care of research animals, including daily observation, record keeping, feeding, watering and animal nutrition
  • Responsible for daily cleaning and sanitation of animal facilities, animal caging and equipment
  • Launder clothes and boots daily
  • Disinfect rooms at study end prior to animal repopulation
  • Safely operate essential farm equipment and perform preventative maintenance
  • Assist research staff with animal procedures, including animal restraint, animal handling, observation, vaccination, sample collection and special feeding requirements or treatments
  • Receive, sort and care for Research and Quality Control animals
  • Maintain a healthy and safe animal environment
  • Maintain and monitor overall animal health and notify designated staff of decline
  • Weekend and holiday chores are required
Nature and Scope: 
  • The incumbent reports to the Animal Farm Manager
  • The incumbent interacts with research, diagnostic and laboratory personnel, as well as outside contacts
  • Accountable for accurate and honest documentation of research data
  • Accountable for complying with the Boehringer-Ingelheim/Newport Business Code of Ethics to the highest standard
  • Accountable for complying with the Company Handbook and all policies set by the Company
  • The position requires a high school diploma or GED and/or livestock/farm background with 2-3 years’ experience
  • Working knowledge of production animal agriculture as well as animal care welfare
  • Must assume responsibility, work independently, without close supervision, and cooperatively with animal care technicians
  • Must be able to follow written instructions, standard operating procedures and communicate effectively with study personnel
  • Must be able to left 50 lbs.
