Scientist I - Diagnostics Virology

Laboratory Opportunities
Job Function/Requirements: 
  • Assists in the coordination, execution and support of all functions in the Diagnostic Virus Isolation department
Essential Job Duties: 
  • Perform Cell Culture in support of the virus isolation
  • Performs virus isolation and identification from veterinary diagnostic specimens
  • Accurately reports results in USALIMS
  • Assists with and helps coordinate other testing in the Diagnostic Virus Isolation Lab as needed
  • Ability to follow, troubleshoot, modify and/or write SOPs in an efficient and accurate manner
  • Successfully and accurately communicates results to supervisor
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on occasion, able to bend, twist and perform fine motor manipulations
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Other duties as assigned
Nature and Scope: 
  • The incumbent reports to and works closely with Virology Lab Supervisor
  • Assist with coordination and performance of daily virus isolation
  • Interact with lab personnel as well as other departments within the company
  • Maintain laboratory and equipment in order to meet regulatory standards to carry out virus isolation procedures
  • The incumbent is responsible for following SOPs, procedures and adhering to good laboratory practices
  • Must be able to conduct work with limited supervision
  • Responsible for accurate and thorough recording of results
  • He/she acts within the guidelines established by company policy and delegated authority
  • Accountable for complying with the BIAH/Newport Business Code of Ethics to the highest standards
  • Accountable for complying with the Company Handbook and all policies set by the Company
Requirements: 
  • The position requires a BS degree in Microbiology and 1-2 years’ experience working in a laboratory or a related field OR an Associate of Science and 5+ years’ experience working in a laboratory or equivalent type of work
  • Ability to comprehend microbiology techniques and language and familiar with the principles of veterinary biologics, diagnostic assays, vaccine production and regulatory agencies
  • The position requires good verbal and written skills
  • Requires the use of good aseptic technique
  • Incumbent must be able to do mathematics and be competent in the metric system
